The Upper Mustang trek is a unique and special journey through the hidden kingdom of Lo. The renowned medieval walled city of Lo Manthang serves as the capital of this region, which is rich in cultural and religious heritage.

Legends rather than documented history embellish the early years of Lo Manthang, which remained an independent principality until 1951. Even today, the king holds an honorary rank in Nepal’s army.

Before 1992, Upper Mustang was inaccessible to outsiders, preserving its undisturbed landscapes with high cliff cave dwellings and striking architecture. This trek offers a genuine insight into the lives of mountain people in Nepal that closely resembles Tibetan culture due to geographical proximity.

While road accessibility has impacted some parts of the Mustang region, our itinerary balances driving with trekking to minimize exposure to roads while still covering major attractions like King’s Palace, monasteries, and vast caves.

Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu
One of the representatives from Sherpa Village Trek will greet you and escort you to the hotel in a private vehicle.

Day 02

Trek Preparation and Flight to Pokhara
Today, you'll need to do some final shopping for any trekking essentials. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the bustling streets of Thamel as you shop. In the afternoon, catch your flight to Pokhara.

Day 03

Flight to Jomsom and trek to Kagbeni (2,804m)
You will board a flight from Pokhara domestic airport to reach Jomsom, with the journey taking approximately 16 minutes. Upon arrival, you will commence your trek towards Kagbeni, which is roughly 4 hours away. After experiencing the stunning scenery and bracing afternoon winds of Jomsom, we will make our way to Kagbeni.

Day 04

Kagbeni to Chele (3,070m)
Our adventure begins by obtaining the necessary permits at a check post, after which we hike through charming villages and scenic trails. The initial part of the trail involves uphill terrain before descending. Our first stop is Tangbe village, where we wander through narrow alleys lined with white-washed houses and pass by barley, buckwheat, and apple farms. We continue on to Chhusang, cross the Kaligandaki River, and ascend towards a cliff. After traversing several ridges, we arrive at Chele.

Day 05

Chele to Syangboche (3,475m)
Today we pass through a location called Eklo Bhatti and also cross the Taklam La Pass (3624m). Once we descend to Samar village, we continue on to a stream. Throughout our journey, we take breaks in areas surrounded by juniper trees, refreshing streams, and breathtaking viewpoints. The people of Mustang utilize dried juniper leaves as incense for special events. Along the way, we will also come across a cave known as Ramchung cave.

Day 06

Syangboche to Ghami (3,520m)
Today, we will begin our uphill trek after breakfast and cross Yamdala Pass (3850m). Along the way, we will pass many teahouses and local settlements with veranda houses reflecting Tibetan influence as we make our way toward Nii Pass (4010m). After crossing the pass, we will descend towards Ghami. Known as one of the largest villages of Lo Manthang, Ghami is surrounded by expansive barren fields.

Day 07

Ghami to GharGompa to Lo Manthang (3,700m)
Today will be an exciting day as we head towards Lo Manthang. Exploring the oldest monastery in Nepal, Ghar Gompa, and learning about Buddhism will be fascinating. We'll also pass through the remote village of Dhakmar. The less-traveled route today initially descends to Charang and then becomes somewhat steep after crossing a river. The beautiful walled town of Lo Manthang is situated near the Tibetan border.

Day 08

Explore the Kingdom of Lo Manthang
Today is shaping up to be another intriguing day. Following a satisfying breakfast at the walled town, we plan to take in the sights and experience what the area has to offer. Our itinerary includes visits to several monasteries such as Chode Gompa, Jampa Monastery, and Thupchen Monastery, each of which holds significant cultural and historical value. Additionally, we will explore the Royal Palace, an impressive four-story structure with breathtaking views of the Himalayas.

Jong cave in Chooser is an artificial cavern shrouded in enigma. It has captivated archaeologists from various parts of the globe, as it was once inhabited by ancient human civilizations, prompting curiosity about its plausibility. The tradition of sky burial continues to endure in certain areas of Upper Mustang.

Day 09

Drive back to Jomsom via Muktinath
Today we will be heading back to Jomsom, taking with us all the memories from the trek. It will take around 6 hours to reach Jomsom directly without stopping at Muktinath; however, if we decide to visit Muktinath, it will add approximately 2 more hours to our journey. Muktinath holds great significance for both Hindu and Buddhist communities in Nepal. According to belief, bathing under all 108 water taps at Muktinath can cleanse one of their sins. Those who prefer not to visit there won't be taken through Muktinath.

Day 10

Drive/Fly back to Pokhara
Today, we will be flying back to Pokhara from Jomsom airport, reminiscing about all the experiences during our trek. If we encounter any difficulties such as bad weather, then we will make the journey back to Pokhara by enjoying the scenic and winding roads leading to Beni-Pokhara.

Day 11

Fly back to Kathmandu
After a 30-minute flight from Pokhara, you'll arrive back in Kathmandu. Spend the remainder of your time here shopping for souvenirs or gifts to bring back home for yourself and your loved ones.
