Paro Sightseeing and Hike to Takishang Monastery
After an early morning meal, we will journey to the well-known Taktshang Monastery (also known as Tiger's Nest Monastery), a centuries-old symbol of Bhutanese culture. Situated 800m/2,640ft above what appears to be a sheer cliff, this iconic monastery was tragically and mysteriously engulfed in fire in April 1998 but has since been restored. Legend holds that in the 8th century, the revered tantric master Guru Rinpoche/ Padmasambhava (2nd Buddha) flew on the back of a tigress to where the monastery now stands. The round trip hike takes approximately five hours with varying terrain – some gentle paths and some steep climbs, alongside stony footpaths and easy trails.
Should you choose to ride a horse, there is an additional cost of US$20 per person. Upon returning from Taktshang Monastery, you can visit Paro Dzong for sightseeing and explore local attractions such as the Paro market.
If preferred over hiking, it is possible to customize your tour accordingly. Visiting a local farmhouse offers an opportunity for immersion into traditional living – including dining, and bathing experience - providing insights beyond just their vivid exteriors at an additional cost of US$25 per person.
Later in the evening, enjoy leisurely walks through the picturesque streets of Paro.
