Upper Dolpo Trek is located in the western part of Nepal and is known for its remote and untouched landscape. The region was off-limits until recently, allowing its traditions and way of life to remain preserved.
In 1990, the first British tour operator organized a trek from Pokhara to Jumla through Lower Dolpo, passing through breathtaking mountain ranges such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Kanjirowa. Trekkers are drawn to this area because of its wild remoteness, stunning scenery, and the friendly nature of the local people who live in these isolated mountainous regions.
The population of this area is quite small, numbering only a few hundred people, and they are among the highest dwellers in the world. The villages in the Upper Dolpo trek are located at 4,300 meters and above. It is here specifically that people still observe the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion. This early sect was largely replaced after Buddhist doctrine began to spread across Tibet in the 9th century.
Peter Matthiessen’s book “The Snow Leopard” and David Snellgrove’s work “Himalayan Pilgrimage” have added to the allure and appeal of Dolpo. These writers visited Shey Gompa, situated north of Phoksundo Lake in inner Dolpo—the primary destination for most trekkers—but this Upper Dolpo trek will lead you even further into this enigmatic land.

Thanks to Sherpa Village Trek, I had an incredible trek in the Dolpo region of Nepal. This area is rarely visited by tourists and it was a privilege to experience the traditional Tibetan villages where time appears to have stood still. In many villages here, walking is the primary mode of transport, and interacting with the locals was a definite highlight for me. I’m already looking forward to my next trek with Sherpa Village in this extraordinary part of the world.
The journey was a success. Having a local guide was crucial for me. The itinerary enabled us to visit and discover the villages and monasteries on our route, and it lasted just the right duration. I wholeheartedly endorse Sherpa Village Trek for an enriching and authentic adventure.
